"The elephant involved in the Kunene region study are for the most part resident outside protected areas and within communal lands. Since both the elephant and human populations are increasing there is a growing problem of land use conflict. Although this desert population has been photographed and discussed many times little scientific research has been carried out. This current project, which in September 2002 radio-collared 8 animals, as part of the programme to identify and monitor the elephants in the Kunene region of north-west Namibia should rectify this situation."
