Abstract

Describes the marketing of elephant products against different backgrounds. Ivory trade had a marked influence on African politics during the 19th Century and left a deep rooted, ill-defined mistrust of ivory dealings. The paper discusses the value of the elephant as a source of food and raw material for manufacture. Ivory stands as the most important raw material. Different methods of trading in it are noted such as public tender and auctions. The values and use of hide, other parts and derivatives, whole carcasses, live animals and hunter trophies are discuss.
